I use knitting needles size 15 mm, 13 stiches, 13 rows.
In this trivet I have used three strips each 1 1/4 inch. I cut the strips in width of fabric, and tie the into a strip as shown in this picture:

I did this with a king bed sheet set I picked up at a garage sale. Ripped it into strips and then crocheted a very pretty rug. I haven't tried my quilt fabric strips yet ....someday soon
